After last year's Christmas special, head judge Len Goodman announced he was leaving Strictly Come Dancing after 12 years and now his replacement has been revealed.

The official Strictly account announced Shirley Ballas, known as the 'Queen of Latin', would be joining the judging panel.

Shirley, who retired from dancing in 1996, is a former 'British Open to the World' Champion, European, German, United Kingdom, United States and International Latin American Champion.

On the BBC's Strictly blog, Shirley is quoted as saying, “I am so excited and over the moon to have been given this wonderful opportunity. I can’t wait to get in to the ballroom and be part of the incredible and respected judging panel. Strictly is so loved by the British public, I have always been a massive fan. I just can’t wait!"

The other judges also had their say with Darcey Bussell expressing how she looks forward to meeting Shirley and welcoming her to the team, and Craig Revel Horwood calling the news 'fantastic'.

Bruno Tonioli added, "I know Shirley well - she is an incredible Latin dancer and trainer and I am sure she will be a great addition to the Strictly team.”

Strictly Come Dancing will return in the autumn.
