Emmerdale fans you are certainly in for a shock later this year because it's been confirmed a major character is set to be killed off from the popular soap.

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS

According to reports in a national newspaper, soap villian Emma Barton is set to leave the farm over the summer in some major scenes.

A source close to soap bosses said, "The writers were looking for their big summer story and they decided Emma would be at the centre of it. They felt there had to be retribution for all the trouble she's caused."

“They are going to be writing in more devious story lines for her and building her into a complete psycho."

However it seems actress Gillian Kearney, who plays Emma, is not happy about her potential departure. The source later added, "Gillian had a discussion to see if they would leave the door open for Emma by they wanted a dramatic death."

It's been a busy year for Emma in Emmerdale. The actress not only murdered her husband James in dramatic scenes, she also manipulated Ashley Thomas to hide her crime whilst he was suffering from dementia.

Despite being able to keep her secret hidden from her neighbours, viewers are starting to see the truth come out and just last week her tape confession, which was filmed by the late Ashley, was found by young Arthur Thomas.

Actress Gillian first joined the Dales in 2015 after appearing in a number of high profile TV roles. The 44-year-old was previously in shows such as Casualty, Brookside and Shameless.

Emmerdale bosses are yet to give any further details about Gillian's exit from the soap but with rumours circulating, we can't expect it will be long.
