Corrie fans STUNNED by secret return in last night's episode

We were NOT expecting that

Coronation Street fans have been reassured that Evil Pat Phelan will FINALLY get his comeuppance soon. After his wife Eileen pushed him off a cliff into the freezing cold sea last month, fans of the show were certain that that was the end of him.

But literally minutes later, he popped up again with some nasty cuts at a B&B. Since then, the resident villain has kept a low profile - but after Gary Windass and his mate found him hiding in a caravan, he's been back in Weatherfield wreaking havoc on the residents.

But Phelan's return to the show hasn't been the biggest shock of the week so far.

After Phelan had left Sarah Platt and Gary tied up at the builder's yard, they thankfully managed to escape, but were locked inside the place.

And when viewers heard footsteps approaching, it seemed as though Phelan had come back to finish them off - but it wasn't him.

Oh no - who should turn up but Gary's mum Anna Windass?

Gary joked to her that she'd taken her time, before they both ran to Eileen's house, and Anna promised, "I won’t let him get away with it again."

This return is particularly baffling to Corrie fans, since the last time we saw Anna she'd be sent to prison for crimes that Phelan committed and it seemed as though they'd effectively thrown away the key.

So when she turned up out of the blue, fans of the soap took to Twitter to vent their confusion.

Will Anna be the one to finish Phelan off in the end?

Coronation Street continues tonight on ITV at 9pm.
