James May won’t return to Top Gear without Jeremy Clarkson

Top Gear co-host James May has ruled out returning to the show without Jeremy Clarkson.
The presenter has revealed to the Guardian that a potential return to the BBC show would be “lame” with a “surrogate Jeremy”.
Clarkson was infamously axed by the BBC for after an altercation with Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon.
May explained: “Me and Hammond with a surrogate Jeremy is a non-starter, it just wouldn’t work. That would be lame or ‘awks’ as young people say.
“It has to be the three of us. You can’t just put a surrogate Jeremy in and expect it to carry on. It would be forced. I don’t believe they would be stupid enough to try that.”
However he did offer Top Gear fans some hope for the future, adding: “It doesn’t mean I won’t go back – we may all go back in the future. It might just be we have a break from it. I don’t know.”
All three Top Gear presenters’ contracts ended last month, with the BBC announcing it will not renew Clarkson’s - however the corporation revealed there are plans to renew Top Gear for 2016.
The BBC also recently confirmed that it plans to air the final Top Gear footage filmed with Jeremy Clarkson this summer.
