Whip-cracking adventurer Indiana Jones has been voted the Greatest Movie Character of All Time by film fans.
Played by Harrison Ford in four adrenaline-pumping movies from 1981 to 2008, Professor Jones – or Indy as he’s known to his friends – was created by illustrious director George Lucas and producer Lawrence Kasdan.
Over 10,000 people were polled on empireonline.com with Indy coming out on top ahead of 007 himself, James Bond, played by Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.
George Lucas said in a succinct statement: “It is wonderful to know Indiana is loved.”
Morgan Rees, editor in chief of Empire, said: “It was truly heartening to see one of my personal favourite film heroes voted as the Empire readers' greatest-ever movie character —Indiana Jones, played so brilliantly by Harrison Ford in Steven Spielberg's evergreen pulp adventure series.”
“It's not hard to see why he's so beloved: handsome, heroic, capable, but he's also got flaws — not only is he afraid of snakes, he also makes mistakes. You can relate to Indy. He's human, not superhuman. There's an element of knowingness and irony to him, too, that only heightens his appeal further. Plus of course, he really knows how to rock a fedora."
Harrison Ford’s other iconic role Han Solo was in third spot alongside fellow Star Wars character and arch nemesis Darth Vader in ninth spot.
Sigourney Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley in the Aliens franchise is the sole female representative in the Top 10.
In a separate poll to find the greatest TV characters, Breaking Bad’s Walter White resigned supreme ahead of Game of Thrones’ Tyrion Lannister and The Simpsons’ Homer Simpson.
Top Ten Greatest Movie Characters: 1. Indiana Jones 2. James Bond 3. Han Solo (Star Wars) 4. Batman 5. Ellen Ripley (Alien) 6. The Joker 7. John McClane (Die Hard) 8. Tyler Durden (Fight Club) 9. Darth Vader (Star Wars) 10. The Dude (The Big Lebowski)
