A woman who was seriously injured in a dog attack in Norfolk is said to be 'recovering' in hospital, with police confirming for the first time the breed was an XL bully.

Officers were called to a back garden in Gately Road in Brisley, near Dereham, shortly before 3pm yesterday.

The woman in her 60s, who was the dog's owner, was being attacked in the back garden of her home.

She suffered multiple injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening. She remains at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital for treatment.

The dog was later located on School Road and later had to be put down.

Police say they attempted to sedate the animal but had to act quickly "due to the threat to the wider public".

Inspector Diana Woodage, of Norfolk Police, said: “This was a terribly sad and distressing situation. Officers were faced with an incredibly difficult situation when they arrived at the scene – a woman being viciously attacked by her dog and was very clearly injured and in some pain."

"In the interests of public safety and at the request of the owner, the dog was humanely destroyed."
