Warning to dog owners in Downham Market over 'toxic' algae in pond

A warning for dog owners after potentially toxic algae was spotted in a pond in Downham Market.

West Norfolk Borough Council tweeted a warning to keep ourselves and our dogs away from the water at The Willows Nature Reserve.

Blue/green algae is potentially toxic to both humans and animals.

Blue-green algae is a natural part of a freshwater ecosystem but its presence is potentially harmful to humans, animals, birds and fish.

Warm weather followed by heavy rain and then further warm, still conditions cause blue-green algae to appear suddenly and there is no way of removing the algae from the water once it is established.

Not all species of blue-green algae are harmful but Waverley Borough Council recommends that people avoid it.

The algal bloom as it can cause ill health through skin, eye contact or if swallowed:

• Dermatitis

• Eye irritation

• Rashes

• Blistering

• Abdominal pain

• Diarrhoea

• Nausea

Anyone who thinks they may have been affected by blue-green algae should seek medical advice or in the case of their pets, veterinary advice.
