Over 18,000 vouchers have been sent out to families of children across Cambridgeshire who are eligible for free school meals.

The £42 vouchers are a continuation of a scheme which has operated in previous school holidays to ensure no one goes hungry.

The County Council agreed to set aside an additional £570,000 to the scheme after Government funding was reduced.

Two of the vouchers have been issued to each family during the summer, the first in July and the second this month.

Once claimed they can be used for up to a year.

An extra £30,000 has also been spent on funding local activities for children during the holidays, with a Local Assistance Scheme also helping families with essential supplies.

Cllr Bryony Goodliffe, Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Children and Young People’s Committee said: “I am delighted that we have been able to issue so many vouchers to help struggling families. The new Joint Administration at the County Council is committed to providing support to the children and their families in recognition of ongoing impact of the pandemic and decided it was imperative to top up the grant offered by the Government to make a real difference to those families who need it most.”
