Parents who have children eligible for free school meals are being urged to sign them up for a programme of free summer activities.

The holiday childcare, activities and food is available for children in Cambridgeshire for up to four weeks of the holidays.

Any child receiving free school meals, because of an income-based benefit, is eligible for the Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme.

It's being funded by the Department for Education and was a success previously during the Easter holidays.

Parents are able to book their child a place on the scheme from today through the County Council.

What does the scheme include?

Here are some of the things children who sign up will have access to:

  • Fun and enriching play opportunities that provide children with new skills and knowledge, or allow them to try out new experiences
  • At least one meal a day
  • Sessions on health eating such as getting children involved in food preparation and cooking, growing fruit and vegetables
  • Support for parents, carers and other family members with guidance on how to source, prepare and cook nutritious low-cost food
  • Information and signposting to other services and support which might be helpful

The programme includes up to 64 hours of free childcare throughout the summer holiday period.

Jonathan Lewis, Director of Education for Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council said: "I am delighted that this excellent scheme is being continued throughout the summer holidays.

"It was hugely successful over the Easter break and provided much-needed healthy food and activity which the children enjoyed enormously.

"The HAF programme also complements the work we are already doing to educate children on the benefits of physical and creative activity and nutritious eating."
