Tributes have been paid to a “larger than life” councillor in Norfolk who's died following an illness.

South Norfolk councillor Stephen Ridley passed away earlier this month.

He represented Bunwell from May 2019 and more recently had served as chairman of a committee and board.

A statement by South Norfolk Council said Mr Ridley died on March 11 following a short illness.

Lord Fuller, leader of the council, said: “Stephen was a larger than life person who could fill a room with his wit, intelligence, professionalism and passion.

“He was a true patriot and an excellent advocate for his residents on our council and he will be sadly missed.”

Mr Ridley was a Conservative councillor and as well as a barrister, but had lately stepped back from court work.

In a statement, South Norfolk and Waveney Valley Conservatives said: “We were saddened to learn of the tragic death of Cllr Stephen Ridley. Our hearts go out to his widow Julie and their family in their bereavement.

“His sound advice and cheerful personality will be greatly missed.”

South Norfolk Council will hold a by-election to select a new representative for Bunwell ward.
