The controversial sell-off of a former council headquarters has been put on hold for the third time, prompting accusations of “skulduggery” from opposition members.

South Norfolk Council (SNC) had been expected to discuss selling off the Conservative-controlled authority’s former Long Stratton offices on Monday, but the item has now been pulled from the agenda.

This was the third time the sale was set to be discussed by the council.

It was put off by councillors in April to allow for the local elections and then again in July while a failed community push to get the building extra protection was investigated.

Council officials have said the latest delay is due to new bids being submitted.

Several offers have already been put forward, including one community scheme backed by Long Stratton Parish Council.

The delay has drawn criticism from Independent councillor Clayton Hudson, who previously sat as a Conservative, who branded the decision “unbelievable”.

He said: “It’s clear some of my former colleagues – I stress, Conservative councillors – are doing everything in their power to ensure the community/community bidders in Long Stratton aren’t bidding on a level playing field.

“Quite frankly it stinks, the skulduggery and game playing now includes late bids – surprise surprise.

“Seriously this is South Norfolk, however, you would be forgiven if this was Russia, Iran or North Korea.”

Explaining the postponement an SNC spokesman said: “The sale of the site is a really important decision, and we need to make sure that we get the best possible price for the site.

“The council has received some late bids, and with best value in mind it is important that the council gives them due consideration.”

The spokesman added that the council has a legal responsibility to achieve the best value for the taxpayer.

Consultants are reviewing the bids on a like-for-like basis across the board, which has added to the delay.

“The bidding process has now been locked,” he added.
