Sainsbury's is cutting more than 3-thousand jobs.

The supermarket chain also plans to shut its remaining in-store cafes in Longwater in Norwich and King's Lynn Hardwick as part of a major overhaul.

The headcount reduction represents about 2 percent of its current 148-thousand-strong workforce.

20 percent of senior management roles will also go.

In a statement, the supermarket chain said: "As part of the company’s plan to become First Choice for Food, Sainsbury’s has shared plans to create space to offer more of its fresh food ranges in more stores. This will involve proposals to close remaining patisserie, hot food and pizza counters while making their most popular items available in the aisles."

"In a further move to simplify the business, the retailer has made the difficult decision to close its remaining 61 Sainsbury’s Cafés, subject to consultation."

"The majority of Sainsbury’s most loyal shoppers do not use the Cafés regularly and Cafés and food halls run by specialist partners are becoming more and more popular."
