Norfolk kids win RSPCA young Photographer Awards
They were picked from more than 4000 entries
Two children from Norfolk have won prizes in this year's RSPCA young Photographer Awards.
Eleven year old Harvey Hill and eight year old Tyler Hood, both from Norwich, were both awarded for their pictures of wild birds.
The two were singled out from more than 4000 entries this year.
Harvey’s image was entitled ‘’A relaxed Dipper”.
He said: “I’m so happy that the judges liked my photo so much.
“While wading through the icy water of the Peak District, I was fortunate enough to spot this extremely tame Dipper. When it perched on this fallen tree in the water, I couldn’t help noticing how relaxed and chilled it was.
"Whilst taking the photo, I was focusing on a detailed portrait. As I was looking back at the image however, I was over the moon with the result. I love the composition of the sunlit bird against the dark background.”
Tyler’s image was entitled “I’m too focused”.
He said: “Sparrowhawks are one of my favourite birds. After spending time with a sparrowhawk family last year, getting to know their behaviour and to photograph them, I was eager to find a nest this year.
"We found a nest local to us with fantastic views, so I kept going to try and get some photos. At first I only saw the male and I learnt, through observing, that he went to a certain branch to bring food for the female to collect. The male would call before approaching the branch. The male would then sit and wait on the branch but I was unable to get a photo.
"So, I moved about to find a place to get a photo. I would walk around the bushes and behind leaves to find a natural border that I wanted. I then tried different heights and angles to find the perfect context and lighting. I tried to aim for the lighting around his head. I spent most weekends and after school observing until I got my shots. It took 10 to 15 hours in total!”
Judge and awards host Chris Packham said: “This year’s contest was difficult to judge as we received so many superb photographs.
“We have seen a fantastic array of animals featured across this year’s competition. Every year I am impressed by the level and skill in the photographs that are submitted. This year’s entries were magnificent - top work everyone!
“The RSPCA Young Photographer Awards is a real celebration of animals and the natural world and I love taking part every year. I hope everyone who entered continues with their love of animals and photography and they should all be proud of their achievements.”
