Plans for new business park at Norwich Airport approved
It will go on a 30-acre site off Amsterdam Way
A massive business park is to be built at Norwich Airport after the scheme was given the go-ahead by the city council.
Permission was granted to create the 30-acre site on land off Amsterdam Way.
The area lies within the boundary of the airport and is currently covered by grassland and a disused taxiway for aircraft.
The site will be split between aviation use and other commercial sectors.
Approved uses include aircraft maintenance, spray painting planes and airport administration.
However, limits have been placed on the site meaning it cannot be used as an air passenger terminal or for parking.
Approving the scheme, a planning officer at Norwich City Council said: “Although the site is not formally allocated for general employment development it is considered that allowing some non-aviation employment development could help deliver some of the essential site infrastructure, increasing the viability of the site for occupancy.
“This would deliver a boost to the provision of high skilled jobs in the Norwich area with resultant social and economic benefits for the locality.”
The approved application covers the broad plans for the site, with future documents setting out appearance, landscaping and layout.
The area has been used for aviation since the Second World War, when it operated as a bomber base and was known as RAF Horsham St Faith.
During the war it was used by both British and American units.
The base closed in 1963 and was bought by the city council and county council in 1967.
