A Norfolk constituency has elected its first Labour MP in 15 years with a landslide victory.

Alice Macdonald has won the Norwich North seat from the Conservatives with 20,794 votes – and a majority of more than 10,000.

The constituency was previously held by Tory MP Chloe Smith, who was first elected in 2009 but did not stand this time round.

Ms Macdonald said: “I feel very privileged to have been elected but that comes with a huge responsibility – there are big challenges across this area.

“I want to get stuck in and help people to make things better.”

Ms Macdonald was chosen to contest the Norwich North constituency in 2022 and says her priorities for the constituency have been informed by two years of speaking to local people.

These include improving access to affordable housing and widening job opportunities for young people living in Norfolk.

Ms Macdonald grew up in Marham and was educated at Downham Market High School until the age of 16, followed by commuting to attend a sixth form in Cambridge.

Her early career was spent working for the Labour Party, finishing as an advisor to MP Harriet Harman during her time as shadow international development secretary in the early 2010s.

Charlotte Salomon, the Conservative candidate, said the result in Norwich North was “no big surprise” – having received 9,944 votes.

She added: “This contest was always going to be tough – but we fought really hard and I’m very proud of that

“No party should be in government forever and I think people wanted to give us a bit of a kicking.”

The Conservative’s Chloe Smith won in 2019 with 50pc of the vote and a majority of 4,738.

Labour have won the General election and are heading to a landslide victory.
