It's feared that surging fuel prices could mean some of Norwich City's most diehard supporters may have to cut back on the number of away games they go to.

Fans who want to see the Canaries play outside of Carrow Road will have to travel at least 100 miles this season.

"You're probably going to be spending £50 on petrol at current prices"

Rob Sainty is chairman of the Canaries Trust, a supporters group who are the clubs sixth largest shareholder.

He's concerned about what's to come: "There's going to be a raft of people who simply cannot afford to indulge in what a suppose you would say is a luxury, it's not an essential of life to be able to go to football but it is an essential to heat to house, pay for your lighting and be able to feed your family.

"Like with all these things it's something that is going to hit the poorest hardest.

"I was looking at the details for the trip to Sunderland at the end of August. Coach travel and a ticket would cost people the best part of £100, it's an awful long way. Even if you are driving up their yourself you're probably going to be spending £50 on petrol at current prices.

"It clearly doesn't make any sense for people from the same area to be going off to games with one or two people in the car, if there's only people who can share because it cuts peoples costs and help the climate as well, because you are using one car instead of two."

"The thing that's driving it is not the price of tickets"

Mr Sainty says there's little footballing authorities could do to help: "The thing that's driving it is not the price of tickets- it's the price of fuel.

"The football clubs and the English Football League have no control over that, this is an issue that the Government and the energy companies have the ability to do something about- but really they are the only ones."
