Norfolk's leading the race in the number of beacons that will be lit during Platinum Jubilee weekend - with just a month to go.

That's according to our county's organising committee - who are coordinating the celebrations in Norfolk.

Mark Hazell is media co-ordinator for Platinum Jubilee Norfolk 2022: "Currently there's just over 101 beacons registered. That's more than for any other previous jubilee in the county and it's the leading number in terms of counties across the UK".

He's really impressed with what's planned across the county: "From young people to older people, the numbers are incredible and the range and types of activities that people are involved in and are going to be putting on is also amazing. It's a real celebration for all of us after a really difficult couple of years. It's an opportunity to come together, celebrate and have a really good time".

"We got street parties, flower festivals and concerts that are going to be put on. Cromer have really pulled out the stops, they are going to have a street dance display and a spitfire fly-past. In Diss, there's a parade and fireworks. In Hardingham, they have got a street party along with a fancy dress competition, where you can come as a member of the Royal Family and possibly win a prize".

Mr Hazell concluded by telling us why he thinks local people are pulling out all the stops for this event: "This county has very strong connections with the Queen, particularly with Sandringham and the fact she spends a lot of time there. Historically, the royal family has those strong links with the estate going back over 100 years. Also, there's a sense that she's a resident here, a very special one at that and people really respond to that".
