A local teaching rep is telling us a more joined-up approach is needed between schools and employers- to help young people.

It's after new research has found that only half of 18 to 24 years olds felt ready for work when they left education for good.

40% of young adults have never done any work experience- according to the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).

"Career guidance has just disappeared from schools"

Scott Lyons also teaches in Norfolk:

"We're hearing more and more from young people and schools that the support for this just isn't there.

"For example, career guidance has just disappeared from schools and as well as quality work experience. My sons have just been on theirs and there have only been there for a week.

"We have already got a generation coming through affected by Covid. They don't need any disadvantages and barriers put in their place.

"Young people who are unsupported and disconnected from the world normally end up to more social and economic disadvantages and issues".

The work in more detail:

The issue is worsening the crisis over the number of young people not in employment, education or training (Neet), said the report.

More schools say they offer high-quality work experience, but two in five 18- to 24-year-olds have never completed any work experience, said the think tank.

"With nearly one million young people aged 16-24 now Neet, an 11-year high, these findings point to a widening opportunity gap, where background plays an ever-growing role in shaping outcomes," said the report, based on research among thousands of young people.

Avnee Morjaria, associate director for public services at IPPR, said: "The Prime Minister's ambition to level the playing field for young people is absolutely right, but our data shows we are moving too slowly, and too many are being left behind.

"With almost a million young people now Neet, we need a serious plan to rebuild opportunity.

"That means support that doesn't stop at the school gates and a national effort to ensure every young person can thrive."

The Government says it wants to get every young person ready for employment with work experience and careers advice
