A charity in Norfolk that looks after Owls is struggling to keep up with the number of birds coming in - and are having to turn some away.

Fritton Owl Sanctuary have launched a ‘go-fund’ page to help pay for an enclosure expansion that’s needed if they’re to stay open past March.

They’ve currently raised over £10,000 and have been inundated with donations over the last few days, after start to fundraise just before Christmas.

“We need at least £20,000-£25,000 to get the work done”

Project manager Chrissi Palmer, is one of their volunteers:

“The tears that’ve been shed over the past couple of days… I’ve not been able to sleep, my phone has been red-hot.

“I started the fundraising target off at £1000 before Christmas, not expecting the response to just go through the roof. We know we need at least £20,000-£25,000 to get the work done.

“We’ve had little girls come in with their pocket money – 50p – and we’ve had people come in and hand us £100.

“We’ve got to keep this open”

“People have said to us – ‘what’s a significant amount?’ – and to us, a little girl giving us her sweetie money is as significant as someone giving us £5 who’s on a tight budget, or £100.

“Abi, who’s here at the moment, she started when she was 15. She’s gone through all her animal management courses and still comes in just to have a cuddle with her favourite owls. We’ve got to keep this open.

“The worst case scenario is if we can’t find home for them, some of them would have to be put down. These are birds that we’ve taken on for people. I don’t even want to think about it.
