Norfolk mum says "mindset change" is needed around paternity leave
Dads here are entitled to two weeks off work after the birth of their child
A mindset change is needed across the country on the importance and necessity of paternity leave for families across the country - according a mum who lives near Norwich.
Campaign group 'The Dad Shift' wrote to the Prime Minister this week, demanding new fathers have more than two weeks off from work, calling this allowance 'the worst in Europe'.
The group have also placed models of babies in slings on a number of statues of men across London - to try and raise awareness about the issue.
Monuments to Gene Kelly, Thierry Henry and Isambard Kingdom Brunel are among those that have been targeted.
"It's often looked down on if they want to work flexibly and be more present for their child"
Rebecca Wright is also from the group 'Pregnant then Screwed':
"I campaign for better maternity rights, but we can't talk about that without addressing paternity rights. Amongst working dads, it's often looked down on if they want to work flexibly and be more present for their child.
"Without the father being present - then the childcare duties falls onto the mother by default. That is a cycle that we need to break and that can only be done if we as a society change our views on it, so that things are made better for both parents."
What's the Government said on this?
In May, Labour said: "we will review the parental leave system, so that it best supports working families within the first year of a Labour government".
