Norfolk MP says UK's trade deals need reviewing to ensure farmers aren't undercut
Local farmers say recent extreme weather, new trade deals and changing government support have presented fresh challenges
One of Norfolk's newly elected MPs is telling us that the Government needs to "look again" at some the UK's trade deals to ensure local farmers aren't being undercut.
The appeal from Terry Jermy of South West Norfolk - with farmers warning that new agreements with Australia undermine current animal and environmental standards.
"That's the most important thing I can do as a local MP"
Terry says stability and certainty are key for this part of the local economy:
"Farmers need to make decisions now for years into the future. This is a long-term business and they need to have confidence in the Government support they'll be getting in the years to come. So they can make the necessary investments in things like machinery.
"I've been in contact over the last few weeks with Daniel Zeichner, (Cambridge MP and Farming Minister), and I hope to get him and other ministers out on field, so they can hear people's concerns. That's the most important thing I can do as a local MP."
Terry says growers are being affected beyond their pockets:
"Farming is a challenging and tough business. You have to work long, hard hours and people's health and well-being have suffered over the last few years. There's been a range of issues over the last few years, from Brexit and Government instability to climate change."
What's the Government said on this?
In their 2024 manifesto, The Labour Party said:
"We will publish a trade strategy and use every lever available to get UK business the access it needs to international markets. This will promote the highest standards when it comes to food production".
