Norfolk Fire Service is looking to raise awareness of the damage caused by burn injuries.

This comes on National Burn Awareness Day, organised by the Children’s Burns Trust and the British Burn Association.

They say it is vital that people continue to educate themselves on the threats posed by hot liquids and surfaces, particularly to young children.

Gregor Preston from Norfolk Fire told us:

"Every day thirty child end up in hospital in the UK with burns and scalds. While up to six hundred children last year were hospitalised by burns from hair-straighteners".

"They can be quite dangerous for young people, if left unattended. Another cause for scalds is hot drinks left unattended".

He went on to say that it remains a serious issue in Norfolk:

"It happens in Norfolk and regularly, small burn on a children can cause hospitalisation. It can have a severe effect on the body, we understand how easy that is to happen".

"We see it time and time again from small burns all the way through to really, really significant ones. The medical process can be really time-consuming, so we are really just urging everyone to take care."

He concluded by telling us that learning first aid is one of the best ways to avoid the worst and save a life:

"It good to see that first aid is being taught more and more in schools now. We also see it an awful lot as part of voluntary groups that young people engage in, scouts, cadets and those type of things. Here First Aid is really important".

"I think its really important that as households we take the time to just think about your own first aid measures."

"One of the biggest things with burns is copious amounts of cooling, very quickly, that can be life-saving.

"Burns can cause shock very quickly. Particularly in young people, it doesn't take a great deal of skin area to be affected".

"So please take time to look and online and ask yourself the question, is your first aid knowledge enough if someone in your family does have a burn?"
