Norfolk saw the second highest amount of accidental drownings last year in England, according to new data.

Nine were recorded in the county across 2024 by the National Water Safety Forum.

That's triple what was seen two years ago and highest seen in the county, in four years.

"Weather conditions always draw people to water"

Nick Ayers is Water Safety lead for the RNLI in the county:

He told us some of the reasons why there were some many accidental drownings here, last year:

"Weather conditions always draw people to water. We've seen recent research which shows that as soon as the temperatures go up, our drowning rates go up as well.

"The accessibility to watersports is also going up, which makes equipment cheaper and easier to get ahold of".

Nick also has this message for those planning on trying their man at water sports:

"It's important to understand the activity that you're doing. If you can, seek professional training or get as much information as you can, so that you can understand all the risks involved.

"From there, understand the location you're going out to, be that a new one or a familiar spot".

The Data in more detail:

Accidental drownings in 2024, (by local authority in East):

Norfolk- 9

Suffolk- 2

Essex- 3

Cambridgeshire- 5

Buckinghamshire- 1

Safety Advice:

National Water Safety Forum's 'Respect the Water' campaign says:

To people who find themselves in trouble in the water is to float to live:

• Tilt your head back with your ears submerged

• Try to relax and breathe normally while you move your hands to help you stay afloat

• Once the effects of the cold water shock pass, shout for help or swim to safety if you can.

If you see someone else in trouble in the water is to Call, Tell, Throw:

• Call 999 to get help

• Tell the struggling person to float on their back

• Throw them something that floats, such as a life ring, inflatable toy, or bottle.
