New boat launched to keep Lowestoft Harbour clean
The Gannet, a work boat, will help clear litter and pollution from the Harbour and Lake Lothing
A new boat has been launched at the Port of Lowestoft, to help keep the town's harbour and Lake Lothing clean.
The Gannet will help clear litter, pollution and vegetation from the water. It is built from recycled aluminium and uses solar panels to generate green electricity.
The vessel was named by a Year 3 pupil at the local Woods Loke Primary School, after a competition run by port operator ABP.
Operations Manager at ABP’s Port of Lowestoft Tom Duit said:
“We are delighted to welcome a new highly sustainable craft to our fleet of vessels. The Gannet will play a vital role in helping us with the clearance of litter that regularly cumulates in the harbour as a result of the strong prevailing from the Southern North Sea.
“The new craft will also play an important role in supporting our day-to-day operations, for example supporting vital bridge maintenance activities, in a more sustainable way.
“The purchase of this new boat highlights ABP’s commitment to play its part in improving its environmental impact across its 21 ports.”
