Plans to bring the famous golden arches to a Norfolk town for the first time have taken a major step forward after a bid for a new restaurant was lodged.

McDonald’s has put in a full application to create its first drive-thru premises in Fakneham after much anticipation.

It comes after the fast food chain’s dreams to build a site on land to the rear of the Holt Road Lidl were first revealed at the end of last year.

The American company says the venue will create 120 jobs and marks a significant investment in the area.

However, the plans have already split opinion in Fakenham, with mayor Angela Glynn questioning whether it was needed at that location, arguing there were already “plenty of fast food outlets in the town”.

In a supporting statement submitted to North Norfolk District Council, agents for McDonald’s said the proposal “represents sustainable development of a prominent brownfield site” and it has promised to fundraise for local charities.

Councillors will make a decision on the application later in the year.
