A driver who had three children as passengers in the car he was driving when it crashed has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, police have said.

Norfolk Police said emergency services were called at 8.36pm on Friday to reports of a three-car collision on the A146 between Hales and Loddon.

The force said a man, who had three children in the blue Vauxhall Astra he was driving, was arrested at the scene.

He was taken to hospital in Norwich for treatment then transferred to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre.

The three children were all taken to hospital.

One was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge where they remain, police said.

Another child was also taken to Addenbrooke's, where they remain, while the third has been discharged from hospital in Norwich.

The male drivers of the two other cars involved in the three-vehicle collision, a red Honda and a black Audi, were taken to hospital in Norwich.

One is still being treated for serious injuries and the other has been discharged.

Norfolk Police said Tancredo Bankhardt, of Saxon Road, Great Yarmouth, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder.

The force said the 40-year-old is also charged with one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, one count of assault, and one count of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour.

He is due to appear before Norwich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Police said officers had received a call at 7.40pm on Friday, before the collision, raising concerns for the safety of a man and three children.

Attempts were made to find the vehicle they were travelling in and engage with him, the force said.

Due to the prior police contact, the force has referred itself to watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as is standard procedure.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information that could help the investigation is asked to contact Norfolk Police on 101, quoting incident number 485 of September 26.
