King's Lynn Town Hall is lighting up this evening (18 October), in memory of Sir David Amess MP.

The Southend West MP was stabbed to death as he met with constituents in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex on Friday (15 October), leaving behind his wife, Lady Julia and their five children.

The Mayor of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Cllr Harry Humphrey, has sent this message:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Sir David’s family and close friends on his shocking death. His murder has deprived his wife and children of a devoted husband and father, and his constituents of their very well-liked and respected MP. He was somebody carrying out his duty on behalf of his constituents. It was a strike against personal lives and the personal way constituency politics are carried out in our country. It was a truly appalling and savage act of terrorism.

“While there are some who carry out such mindless acts of terror and others that might condone such atrocities, the rest of our country deplore such savagery which strikes at the heart of our democracy and the safety of our people.

“Jo Cox MP was murdered 5 years ago whilst going to her constituency surgery and there have been other threats and attacks on our MPs over the years. Our MPs are aware of the risk and try to manage it where possible, but they recognise the value and confidentiality of the face-to-face meeting, and many have said that they will continue with their surgeries. We thank them for their dedication and hope that their safety at surgeries can be improved to prevent future attacks.

“By all reports Sir David was a dedicated constituency MP and valued in his Parliamentary activities on many issues. He will be sorely missed.

“We send condolences to his family and friends in their very sad loss.”

Flags are being flown at half-mast at borough council buildings today as a mark of respect, and a one-minute silence will be held at the start Council Committees and member training this week to commemorate the life and public service of Sir David.

It's hoped it'll also send a message of ‘love to his family and friends and a message of support to all those in politics that an attack on any of them is an attack on democracy and therefore all of us and will not win.’

The Leader, Mayor, Cllr Parish and Cllr Joyce are writing a joint letter of support and condolences to our MP’s and the Speaker of the House.
