Ahead of the highly-anticipated first match of UEFA Euro 2024 football fans are being reminded to enjoy the tournament safely and responsibly.

Large numbers of people are expected to gather in pubs, family gardens, and dedicated fan zones to soak up the atmosphere and excitement.

The month-long festival of football being staged in Germany runs from Friday 14 June to Sunday 14 July.

Chief Insp Nick Paling said in the past there had been few issues but extra officers would be on hand should problems arise:

“It is likely to be an exciting time for football fans,” he said. "But win, lose, or draw we are reminding people to conduct themselves in a sporting spirit.

“We know passions run high and while the tournament will likely give pubs a boost, excess alcohol can be a factor that unfortunately drives criminal behaviour spanning rowdiness and also drink-driving.

“With that in mind we would remind people to be mindful of their alcohol intake and to look out for each other so that everyone can have the best possible experience.

“We will have more officers around on match days so please do come and say hello and let us know of any issues that concern you.

“Whoever you support and whatever the outcome, we hope everyone enjoys the tournament in line with competition’s motto ‘united by football’.”

A total of 51 games stand between the opening match on Friday 14 June and the final on Sunday 14 July .

With so many fixtures and opportunities for a night out, Norfolk Police will also focus on driving under the influence during the tournament.

Those heading home after a match or driving to work the next morning are being reminded there is no safe drink or drug drive limit.

Officers from the Roads and Armed Policing Team will be on hand at fan zones and popular venues, throughout the tournament, to ensure that those travelling home are doing so safely.

Inspector Will Drummond, said: “We understand that lots of people will be out celebrating as a part of the month-long event but this should never involve drink or drug driving.

“Your actions can have devastating consequences, not only for you but also those travelling around you.

"Do not be selfish and do not put yourself at risk.”
