Fears of further damage to cliffs at Hemsby as higher than usual tides expected
Great Yarmouth Council say they're 'monitoring' the situation
There are fear of further damage to the fragile cliffs at Hemsby this weekend, due to higher than usual September tides.
They are expected to arrive today and last until Monday morning.
Several metres of the cliffside has already been lost to the sea this year, with some residents losing their homes.
There's already a temporary rock barrier in place at the popular holiday destination, but plans for a permanent defensive barrier will need £15m in funding.
A spokesperson for Great Yarmouth Borough Council said: ‘’Higher than usual September tides are expected between today and Monday, September 4, and Great Yarmouth Borough Council will be monitoring the situation."
"Hopefully the weather conditions will be favourable, but if there is further erosion of the cliffs in Hemsby the council has advised those closest to the beach what steps they can take to protect themselves.
"And, if necessary, GYBC will provide an appropriate response to erosion, supporting homeowners who are impacted.’’
