Heavy rain and 75mph winds forecast for East of England
The Met Office warns of travel disruption, possible flooding and power cuts.
People in the East of England are being urged to prepare for severe weather, as heavy rain and powerful winds are due to hit the region from Wednesday evening through Thursday.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for both rain and wind, covering large parts of the East of England, and says disruption to travel and power supplies is possible.
Rain warning from Wednesday night
A yellow warning for rain is in place for most of southern England, including the East of England, from Wednesday evening and will last all day Thursday until 9pm.
Forecasters say some areas could see up to 50mm of rainfall by early Thursday morning, with the possibility of even higher totals in parts of the region. The Met Office said the rain could lead to localised flooding of roads, public transport delays, and homes or businesses taking in water.
Wind warning through Thursday
On Thursday, a separate yellow warning for wind covers the East of England up to Scarborough. Gusts of up to 75mph are possible in the most exposed coastal spots. For much of the affected area, winds could reach 55mph, with 65mph possible near coastal areas.
The Met Office is warning that strong winds may lead to power cuts, travel disruption and damage to buildings. There is also a small chance of injuries and danger to life from large waves and debris being thrown onto seafronts and coastal roads.
Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said, “The low is deepening as it crosses the UK, it’s likely to bring a swathe of strong winds as well, gales around southern and eastern coasts, the risk of 60-mile-per hour gusts in some exposed spots, perhaps even a touch more in places.”
What to expect
Public transport may be affected, and drivers are being advised to allow extra time and take care due to spray and possible flooding. Conditions before Wednesday night are expected to be a mix of bright spells and showers.
Residents, businesses, and travellers in the East of England are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and to be cautious during the adverse weather.
