A drink driver has been jailed after crashing into the barriers outside a police station in Wisbech.

29 year old Jonas Vaitkevicius, of Newlands Road in Chatteris, was seen to go round a corner at speed, before his VW Polo collided with bars between Churchill Road and the Horsefair roundabout at around 7pm on Monday (22 August).

The car continued to drive down Bedford Street, with Vaitkevicius abandoning his vehicle on Chase Street. He was stopped in Cotterell Way.

A breathaliser revealed he was almost three times the drink-drive limit.

A fingerprint scan also revealed his name was formerly Mantas Vaitkevicius and he'd been deported from the UK in 2018.

He appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (August 24) where he was jailed for eight weeks and disqualified from driving for a year after admitting charges of drink driving and breaching a deportation order.

PC Ryan Windass, of Cambridgeshire Constabulary, said: “Those who choose to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol not only risk their own lives but the lives of others as we sadly see each year.

“We can’t be everywhere but will continue to patrol the county’s roads on the lookout for drink drivers, however we do have a confidential hotline where members of the public can report concerns or information to us.”
