Fenland District Council is marking Commonwealth Day today by flying the Commonwealth flag at Fenland Hall in March.

Cllr Alex Miscandlon

Council Chairman Cllr Alex Miscandlon said:

"Normally on Commonwealth Day we would gather to celebrate the occasion with a flag-raising ceremony but this year, due to the pandemic, this will not be possible. The flag will still be flying though to show our support and appreciation of the values the Commonwealth upholds.

"The theme this year is 'Delivering a Common Future' to highlight how the 54 member countries in the Commonwealth family are innovating, connecting and transforming to help achieve some of its biggest goals, such as fighting climate change, promoting good governance and boosting trade. We also are taking the opportunity to promote the Commonwealth's shared values of peace, democracy and equality, and celebrate the association's rich diversity by reminding ourselves of the Commonwealth Affirmation.

"The Commonwealth is one big family, regardless of location, race, colour or creed and long may it continue. We look forward to the pandemic ending so that members of the Commonwealth community can resume normality and work together to create a future after Covid."
