Fens Day is here!
It's time to celebrate
Last updated 19th Jun 2021
Wisbech Castle and other locations offer events, guided walks and exhibitions on the first in-person Celebrate the Fens Day this weekend.
For us in Norfolk, the closest starting point to explore the Fens are the Open Day at Wisbech Castle and a guided walk in Kings Lynn along the river and to Shakespeare Guildhall. Both happen today (19 June).
People who still prefer to celebrate the Fens from a distance can join the digital events. Whisbech Castle offers a virtual tour through its tunnels, and artists exhibit their work in a virtual version of the town rebuilt in the open-world construction game Minecraft.
Passionate Fen photographers can send their best pictures in for the 2021 calender competition, or share their impressions on Twitter under the #CelebrateTheFens.
Karen Merrison runs the website Fascinating Fens and has organised the celebration weekend. The event was born after she found an “overwhelming” response on Twitter to her idea of dedicating a day to celebrating the Fens. She says she wants to help people
After a virtual start in the middle of the pandemic last year, Karen says she is excited to bring the community together for in-person events this time:
“More and more things have been added, which is really exciting – but it makes it therefore harder to decide which ones to go to!”
The natural marshland of the Fens is home to a variety of plant and animal species. It has been called the “Holy Land of the English” for its many cathedrals and surrounds towns with a rich history such as Cambridge and Wisbech.
