Breckland foodbank secures expansion to meet growing demand
New foodbank storage has been secured for Mid-Norfolk Foodbank.
Mid-Norfolk Foodbank, which is based in Dereham, has been given £2,500 by Breckland Council to help fund a new food storage unit.
The authority says the funding will ensure the foodbank volunteers can operate safely in extended premises, store additional food donations, and meet the growing demand for its services.
Between March and November 2020 the foodbank saw demand go up by 50% on the same period the year before.
More than 46 tonnes of food has been given out in mid-Norfolk since the pandemic began last March.
The foodbank, which is supported by Trussell Trust, currently delivers food to centres in Dereham, Swaffham and Fakenham, from its base in Toftwood, but the surge in demand has meant more space is needed.
Cllr Alison Webb, Executive Member for Health & Housing commented "The Mid-Norfolk Foodbank have provided an exceptional service to local residents during the Covid-19 pandemic and it was clear that more financial support was needed to ensure this invaluable service continued in a safe environment.
"The £2500 grant is in addition to a previous £10,000 grant we supplied in 2020, ensuring local residents in need can access food.
"This support is being delivered as part of the Inspiring Communities project, which is investing £1 million into local community groups working on key projects to support the most vulnerable in society."
Dave Pearson, Chairman of Trustees for Mid-Norfolk Foodbank based in Dereham said "We would like to say a sincere thank you to Breckland Council for their tremendous support and help in securing this new storage unit.
"With this grant of £2500 we can now work safely, effectively and help more people in our local community."
