Bernard Matthews is considering closing its Norfolk-based factory.

Around 600 people work at the Great Witchingham site, but the poultry producer, which has been based there since 1955, says it's no longer commercially viable, and operating at a loss.

The company as a whole also continues to make losses. Last year there were £10m of losses from £25m losses the previous year.

The company says it'll offer workers roles at other sites - if the closure's confirmed.

A spokesman for the Great Witchingham site said:

"Following a review of our operations in East Anglia, we are proposing to make changes to help us overcome the huge challenges facing our sector.

Regrettably, our cooked meat site at Great Witchingham is not a sustainable operation. Despite investment in recent years and our efforts to secure more business, it is still loss-making and not commercially viable.

Therefore our proposal is to cease operations at this location, putting the site at risk of closure.

We understand this will be extremely disappointing news for everyone concerned at Great Witchingham. This proposal is in no way a reflection of the hard work and commitment our colleagues show every day.

If closure is confirmed, we will be able to offer colleagues alternative roles at our sister site at Holton, or across our wider group at company sites in East Anglia, where we intend to invest and grow.

Our key priority now is to hold consultations with all employees and their representatives and explore the full range of options before making any final decisions."

What does the Unite union say?

Unite regional officer Mark Jaina said: “The potential closure of the Bernard Matthews’ site in Great Witchingham is devastating news for its workers and the local area. Unite will be offering support to our members at this difficult time.

“We will now be entering consultations with Bernard Matthews and will ensure our members’ best interests are the priority.”
