A new testing site for people who don't have symptoms of Covid-19 opens in Swaffham today.

Two units will be available in the town at different times this week to try and prevent any further spread of the virus.

The Theatre Street car park will be offering drop-in sessions on Tuesday 8th June and Saturday 12th June, 8am to 6.30pm.

While the Market Place car park site will be open on Wednesday 9th June and Friday 11th June 8am to 6.30pm.

Around one in three people don't show any signs of having Covid-19 so could be spreading the disease without knowing it.

It's hoped that by offering more testing, as people start to mix more with friends and family, that any infections will be caught early to prevent further spreading of the virus.

The testing scheme is being delivered locally in partnership with Breckland District Council and Norfolk County Council's Public Health team.

It's already being offered in other parts of the county including King's Lynn, Thetford, Great Yarmouth and Norwich.

People who don't have symptoms can simply drop in to pick up their lateral flow test.

Anyone who does have symptoms - a high temperature, a new continuous cough, or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste - should instead book a test via the NHS or calling 119.

Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen, Breckland Council's Leader, commented: "We need to take every measure possible as we open up our community to ensure Covid-19 is not spreading undetected within the community, and possibly putting vulnerable people at risk.

"These tests can help identify people who have Covid but no symptoms, ensuring they avoid spreading it to their friends, loved ones and within their communities.

"I hope residents in and around Thetford will make the most of the opportunity to access a test which does not require pre-booking."
