Wolverhampton teenager sentenced for killing schoolboy in knife fight
The 17-year-old has been sentenced to six years for killing Zane Smart.
A 17-year-old boy, who can't be named for legal reasons, has been sentenced to six years for the death of a 15 year-old schoolboy Zane Smart
It was during a fight arranged on social media when the 17 year-old stabbed Zane Smart with a vegetable knife.
Zane died from a knife wound in the chest near the Shropshire Union Canal in Pendeford last May.
The 17 year-old wad found guilty of manslaughter after a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Detective Inspector Hannah Whitehouse, from West Midlands Police said: "Zane was on his bike outside Pendeford fish shop, when the defendant came and interacted with him with some other associates as well.
"Some sort of activity happened there and what we believe then happened is that both Zane and the defendant agreed to meet by the canal and sort it out basically.
"We believe both boys were in possession of knives and very sadly an injury was inflicted to Zane, which was fatal and led to him sadly passing away at the scene."
Medics and an air ambulance crew delivered support and care to Zane at the scene.
The court heard how Zane did cause minor injuries to the defendant during the incident at the canal.
The defendant told jurors he stabbed Zane "to protect himself" after being left "frightened" at seeing a large knife.
