A force has launched an internal investigation after footage emerged showing a West Midlands Police officer appearing to attempt to trip a football fan after a recent Premier League match.

A short six-second clip posted on the @EnglishFootyBible Instagram page, three days ago, showed an officer, following behind the male fan, appearing to clip the man's trailing leg with his right foot.

Off-camera, another man can be heard laughing immediately after the incident and saying "he's kicked him for no reason".

The officer then appears to gesture towards the fan, who looks back towards him.

The footage has been watched more than 18,000 times.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police confirmed an investigation into the incident was underway.

She said: "The force is aware of a section of footage which was taken following the recent Wolves v Arsenal fixture.

"It comes after we tried to engage with a small number of fans suspected of being involved in anti-social behaviour.

"Our Professional Standards Department (PSD) are aware of the footage and will be conducting a review to establish the full context."
