West Midlands drivers urged to plan ahead with M42 road closure
Parts of the M42 near Solihull will be fully closed for 6 days.
Motorists in the West Midlands are being advised to plan ahead, with parts of the M42 fully closed for 6 days.
HS2 is demolishing a bridge across the M42 between junction 6 and 7, and will be fully closed in both directions.
The closure begins today (Friday 11 August) at 9pm and lasts until Monday 14 August at 6am.
Further closures will take place from next week until Thursday, with part of the M42 fully closed for the installation of new overhead gantries.
It’s part of a multi-million upgrade at junction 6 near Solihull.  
National Highways is upgrading the junction because they say traffic congestion and poor journey reliability have constrained investment and economic growth around the M42 at junction 6.
To ensure the safety of the teams delivering this phase of the project and to keep motorists safe while work takes place, closures and lane restrictions will be in place between 10pm and 5am on the following dates:
Monday 14 August:
- M42 closed southbound between junction 6 to junction 5
- M42 northbound lane 2 & 3 closure between junction 5 and 6
- Diversion: Exit at M42 junction 6, A45 west, Damson Parkway, A41 south to re-join the M42 southbound at junction 5
Tuesday 15 August:
- M42 closed southbound between junction 6 to junction 5
- M42 northbound lane 2 & 3 closure between junction 5 to 6
- Diversion: Exit at M42 junction 6, A45 west, Damson Parkway, A41 south to re-join the M42 southbound at junction 5
Wednesday 16 August:
- M42 closed southbound between junction 6 and junction 5
- Diversion: Exit at M42 junction 6, A45 west, Damson Parkway, A41 south to re-join the M42 southbound at junction 5
Thursday 17 August:
- M42 closed in both directions between junction 5 and junction 6
- Diversion: Southbound: exit at M42 junction 6, A45 west, Damson Parkway, A41 south to re-join the M42 southbound at junction 5.
- Northbound diversion: exit at M42 junction 5, A41 north to Damson Parkway, A45 east to re-join the M42 northbound at junction 6
A fully signposted diversion route will be in place.
