The UK's first hydrogen lorry has been unveiled in Warwickshire, in the hope that it will provide an alternative to petrol amidst rising fuel costs.
It's been launched by Tevva Electric Trucks at the Road Transport Expo in Stoneleigh today (30th June).
Hydrogen has been used in trucks and other forms of public transportation, like buses, for some time and is more environmentally friendly than petrol.
The hydrogen-electric vehicle includes hydrogen fuel cells, which are effective as a backup energy source to EV batteries, as they are more energy-dense and can support longer ranges, heavier payloads, and longer uptime via faster refuelling.
This means that, in time, hydrogen stations could replace diesel refuelling stations for trucks, and ways for moving hydrogen around would be similar to those of other fuels.
The first hydrogen fuel cell truck will be 7.5t (followed by 12t and 19t variants), will have a range of up to 500km (310miles).
Asher Bennett is the founder and CEO of Tevva Electric trucks says "The challenges of electrifying any vehicle would have been less performance or range and higher costs.
"But because we're solving the range issue which, funnily enough, also solves the cost issue.
"That's where the savings come from, driving compared to the cost of driving a diesel truck, especially at these high fuel costs."
