Over a thousand knives, machetes and guns have been collected around the West Midlands in the last six months.

They were all handed into Weapon Surrender Bins that are placed around Birmingham, the Black Country and Coventry.

Currently, the West Midlands have 24 types of these bins strategically placed in locations.

After the weapons are taken out the bins, they are destroyed.

These bins are only one type of measure by the Police and Crime Commissioner to help prevent and tackle knife crime in the areas.

It's part of the Violence Reduction Partnership.

Simon Foster, West Midland's Police and Crime Commissioner said: "One of my top priorities is the prevention and reduction of tackling serious violence.

"I'm pleased to see the funding I've put into these Weapon Surrender Bins are beginning to produce results.

"Certainly in a period of the last six months, there's been over eleven hundred weapons retrieved from these bins.

"I have a commitment to these Weapon Surrender Bins and hope to keep rolling more out across the West Midlands."
