Tributes for a service dog who worked for the West Midlands Fire Services have been coming in since it was announced he passed away on Tuesday.

Kai helped conduct fire investigations at hundreds of incidents across the West Midlands.

The 10-year-old Belgian Malinois was retired in January after suddenly going blind overnight.

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) said: "He was nearing the end of his career with us, but his sudden and unexpected sight issues meant he was unable to continue to carry out his work safely."

His handler, Mat Dixon, released an update at the time, saying he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He decided against putting the aging dog through extensive treatment and focused on keeping him as comfortable as possible.

Mat also took to Twitter to thank everyone for all their well wishes.

One Twitter user said: "I'm so sorry to hear this... Sending our biggest hugs."

Another said: "Oh mate, I'm so sorry. The hardest part is saying goodbye... He was a wonderful dog and it was a pleasure to get to meet you and work alongside him. Rest easy Kai."

WMFS added: "Very sadly, Kai passed away (7 March 2023)

"Having conducted fire investigations at hundreds of incidents in the West Midlands and elsewhere, Kai’s service to our communities has been vital.

"We would ask that Mat’s privacy be respected at this time."
