Sutton Coldfield candidate halts campaign after son "attacked"

A Sutton Coldfield Parliamentary candidate has abandoned his campaign after his son was allegedly attacked with a baseball bat while out leafleting.

Wajad Burky, a Birmingham estate agent standing for the Workers Party of Britain has suspended his final days of campaigning.

Wajad said: "I have to stop the campaign now. It is really sad because I have fought a positive campaign, attended all the hustings, and the last three days are so important to any campaign."

They reported the attack to West Midlands Police.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We're investigating after a man was attacked by a group of people armed with weapons on Beaconsfield Road, Sutton Coldfield, on Sunday.

"Around eight people arrived on motorbikes and cars before attacking the man with a baseball bat.

"A knife was also produced during the attack.

"The victim was left with an injury to the back of his head and went to hospital for treatment.

"We are examining CCTV and carrying out other enquiries."
