Solihull man jailed for violent attack on woman
He hit a woman with a chair leg and grabbed her by the throat
A Solihull man has been jailed after he attacked a woman.
A court heard how John Cummings had attended a house in Smiths Woods, demanding to see one of the occupants.
A woman, who lived there, tried to stop him, but he forced his way in. Police said he grabbed her by the throat, then hit her in the face and head with a chair.
It caused serious injuries to her scalp, face, neck and arm. The police were then called and the 44-year-old fled the property.
Cummings refused to open the door to police, when they visited his Sheldon home a couple of days later.
He lunged at officers, before being tasered, once they forced their way in.
During the arrest Cummings continued to abuse officers and police say he used a racial slur against one of them.
Police found he had sent abusive messages and voicemails to a man he had intended to go after.
Cummings was charged with wounding, aggravated burglary, non-fatal strangulation, harassment, assaulting an emergency worker and racially aggravated harassment.
He was jailed for 5 years after he was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court on 6th December 2024.
Sergeant Tracey Gordon, From Solihull CID, said: "I am really proud of the team effort involved in taking this incredibly dangerous individual off the street.
"Officers from our team, as well as colleagues from the LEO's neighbourhood team worked around the clock to investigate and build this case following what was a truly horrific attack on an innocent person," she said.
