Shrewsbury swimming club saved from closure
The club raised over fifteen thousand pounds in donations.
A swimming club in Shrewsbury has been saved after it faced months of closure threats.
Shrewsbury Amateur Swimming Club have battled a loss in members, the pandemic and cost of living crisis and were told they wouldn't have a pool to swim in.
Last July, the club received news that their pool had roof damage and would close for the foreseeable future.
After a big fundraising effort they began in November, the club have been able to fundraise over fifteen thousand pounds.
That figure has been matched by Swim England.
Sam is a member at the club and said: "It's amazing that the club has been given a lifeline. We just need to keep pushing and growing the members at the club to keep numbers growing again.
"Swimming is so important to everybody, it's a life skill, creates social networks and can bring you friends and memories for life.
"We were so happy to have managed to achieve our donations target too."
The money raised will also go towards funding coaching, buying equipment and swimming galas.
In the West Midlands there is currently a deficit of fifteen pools, which is set to rise to ninety-three by 2040.
As well, over the next eighteen years, up to forty percent of pools will close.
