Shrewsbury campaigners calling for action on polluting rivers
Upsewage creek is the campaign group urging councillors and MPs to work on cleaning the River Severn.
Campaigners in Shrewsbury, known as Upsewage Creek, are calling for action today over the polluting of the River Severn.
They're urging the public to join them at Pride Hill, where they'll have a stall with leaflets.
It's also part of a national day of action with Extinction Rebellion.
Reports from Shrewsbury Anglers show that sanitary products were being picked out more than fish.
Jamie Russell is a campaigner and said: "Lots of us are people with parents and grandparents who go down to the river and we then realise what a bad ecological state the river is in.
"We have group together as an example of people power, to put pressure on our MPs and town councillors and county councillors and water companies to try and get them to improve the quality of the water that runs through Shrewsbury."
Extinction Rebellion groups around the UK will unveil blue plaques to shine a light on the 265 MPs who voted against amendment 45 to the Environment Act 2021 last October. The amendment would have stopped water companies from pumping waste into rivers and seas.
Shrewsbury Town Council described the situation as ‘embarrassing’ and is setting up a public meeting at Theatre Severn on February 27.
