Pressure has been building on West Midlands Police to take action in tackling dangerous driving, and now Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster, has responded saying it a "top priority" in the force.

It's after a multiple hit and runs have been rising in the region, resulting in tragic deaths of multiple children.

Just last Thursday, a seven-year-old girl was killed in a fatal hit and run in Walsall.

Katniss Seleznev was hit by a motorcycle, whihc police are still investigating. A 14-year-old boy was released on bail on Saturday (29 July) on strict conditions.

Katniss is just one of a few children who have lost their lives to reckless driving and no road safety in the region this year.

West Midlands Police have been running operations to catch drivers and prevent any more lives being lost.

PCC, Simon Foster, said: "We need a range of collaborative action with partners throughout the region and nation.

"That includes myself, West Midlands Police, the West Midlands Combined Authority, the Metro Mayor, local authorities, National Highways and Central Government, if we are to reduce the number of people tragically and avoidably being killed on our roads".

He's hoping for better road layouts, more effective speed cameras and the re-introduction to fixed penalty fines to then fund road safety policies.

This is something which campaigners have been calling for the last few months, which in a board meeting was acknowledged by the PCC.

West Midlands Police are planning to run more road safety operations for the rest of the summer.
