Walsall Council is championing Loneliness Awareness Week, which runs from 10-16 June 2024 by highlighting the importance of social connection and showcasing the support available to residents.

Loneliness impacts people of all ages. The week serves as a timely reminder to check in on friends, family and neighbours who may be feeling isolated.

Residents can get free support for loneliness and isolation through a number of services in Walsall.

Making Connections Walsall is free service which provides one-to-one support to help residents overcome loneliness and social isolation. It offers befriending opportunities, connects individuals with community activities and signposts to further support services.

Residents can also visit the Let’s Chat bus, which travels to different venues across the borough to get support for a range of topics.

The Walsall Wellbeing Directory also hosts a comprehensive list of activity providers and programmes for residents to get involved in.

Nadia Inglis, Interim Director of Public Health at Walsall Council said,

“Loneliness Awareness Week takes place every June, which seeks to not only raise awareness of loneliness but also empower people to connect with others and their local communities.

“This year, I encourage Walsall residents to pledge to making a random act of connection, which will encourage everyone to increase those simple, everyday moments of connection, feel happier and less lonely. Connecting with others is one of Walsall’s eight steps to wellbeing, an approach that helps residents to understand how they can improve or maintain their wellbeing.

“I would also encourage residents to access the variety of local services that we have available across the borough.

“We know that loneliness and isolation can be challenging for some people. If you or someone you know is worried about feeling lonely, call 0800 008 6516 or visit the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust website for details of your nearest Sanctuary Hub.”
