Man seriously injured in Smethwick shooting

A 21-year-old man has a serious eye injury following a shooting in Smethwick.

It happened at the junction of Highbury Road and Mallin Street just before 9pm last night (Tuesday 8th October).

West Midlands Police say the 21-year-old was walking down the road when a car stopped alongside him and shot at him before driving away.

He was taken to hospital with a serious injury to his eye.

Part of the area remains cordoned off this morning.

Detective Sergeant Lee Bailey, from Force CID, team, said:

“We are in the early stages of our investigation and I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area last night and may have heard or seen anything.

“A man was walking down the road when a large dark coloured 4x4 type car stopped alongside him and shot at him, before driving away. We are aware that a person walking down Mallin Street witnessed the incident before fleeing on foot. We are particularly interested in speaking to this person. We are also keen to speak to any drivers who were in the general area, especially if they have dashcam footage.

“If you know anything about what happened last night, please speak to us."
