A man has been convicted of killing another man who died at a property in Aston earlier this year.

Maiel Abdulbaki stabbed Minh Thuc Tran, also known as Richard, in the back at an address on Arden Road on the 15 January before going on the run.

Other residents attempted to help Minh, but nothing could be done to save the 43-year-old and sadly he died at the scene.

A manhunt commenced for Abdulbaki and he was circulated as wanted in connection with Minh’s death.

The next day, Abdulbaki approached officers in New Street, Birmingham telling them he had been a victim of a stabbing. They immediately recognised him and he was arrested.

Abdulbaki was still in the clothing he was wearing when he fled the scene and Minh’s blood was found on his clothes.

During interview, he told detectives he had acted in self-defence claiming that a series of incidents had led up to the stabbing.

At Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday (24 July), the 44-year-old was found not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter.

Detective Sergeant Chris Smith from our Homicide team, said: “I hope this verdict brings some peace to Minh’s family.

“Our team worked tirelessly on this case and I am pleased we have been able to secure justice for Minh.”

Abdulbaki will be sentenced next month.
